Overview |
Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) collects and provides access to material related to the history of the University of Maryland, the state of Maryland, literature and rare books, postwar Japan, and American history and culture, especially as it relates to labor, mass media, and the performing arts. SCUA materials are available for research at Hornbake Library, which includes the Maryland Room–SCUA’s reading room–, an instruction room, exhibition gallery, study spaces, and the Katherine Anne Porter Room, a replica of American author Katherine Anne Porter’s personal library. Appointments are required for research in the Maryland Room and should be made three business days in advance. |

Repository Collecting Strengths |
Collection strengths include: University Archives: the repository for a broad range of materials documenting the history and present activities of the University of Maryland, and in particular, the College Park campus; State of Maryland collections: including a variety of items to support the study of the many aspects of life in the state, including politics, arts, sports and recreation, agriculture, among others; Labor and Unions collections: comprised of AFL-CIO Department records, trade department records, international union records, union programs, union organizations with allied or affiliate relationships with the AFL-CIO, and personal papers of union leaders; Mass Media collections: including wide-ranging resources documenting the history of commercial and noncommercial radio and television in the United States; Postwar Japan collections: covering the years following the end of World War II through the years of the Occupation of Japan; Performing Arts and Music collections: documenting performance practice, instruction, and scholarship; and Literature and Rare Books collections: including both book and manuscript holdings that document the lives and work of significant literary figures as well as books and pamphlets dating from the 15th century to the present, covering a variety of subjects encompassing the humanities. |
