The Special Collections department collects materials of enduring historical and cultural value—housing, preserving, and making accessible materials that are original, rare, unique, fragile, and archival. Our collections and staff support UMBC’s research and educational mission and its dedication to cultural and ethnic diversity, social responsibility, and lifelong learning.
Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) collects and provides access to material related to the history of the University of Maryland, the state of Maryland, literature and rare books, postwar Japan, and American history and culture, especially as it relates to labor, mass media, and the performing arts.
The H. Furlong Baldwin Library holds more than 7 million items spanning five centuries, from early colonial and Revolutionary War records to 21st century materials that encompass arts and culture, politics, and local and national issues, including the struggle for civil rights.
